F1 driving rules for drivers published by FIA

In a document sent to Formula 3 drivers ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix to remind them of what they are and are not allowed to do, the governing body released the document which was sent to teams and F1 drivers earlier this year.

The “Driving Standards Guidelines” were released ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in response to a request from Grand Prix drivers to better understand the factors considered by marshals when judging incidents.

The FIA noted: “For the avoidance of doubt, these are guidelines only to assist the stewards in their decision-making and are not binding.

“All Stewards’ decisions will be taken in accordance with the FIA International Sporting Code read in conjunction with all relevant regulations applicable to Formula 1.”

The document outlines what drivers are and are not allowed to do when it comes to overtaking a rival.

To pass on the inside of a bend

For an overtaken car to be required to leave enough room for an overtaking car, the overtaking car must have a significant portion of the car next to the overtaken car and the overtaking maneuver must be performed in a safe and controlled manner , while allowing the car to stay clearly within the limits of the track.

When considering what is a “significant portion” for overtaking on the inside of a corner, among the various factors that will be considered by the Stewards when exercising their discretion, the Stewards will consider if the front tires of the overtaking car are next to the other car at the latest at the apex of the corner.

The overtaken car must be able to complete the turn while staying within the track boundaries.

In reference to chicanes and S-bends

The above guidelines would apply equally for each corner.

As previously reported, the guidelines also confirmed that the FIA imposes strict enforcement of track limits, obstruction and a driver’s responsibility to “make clear” any advantage gained by leaving the track.
