Cedar Springs PS gets ready for the school year with new rules

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. (WOOD) – Districts in western Michigan are bracing for the start of a new school year, with many having to adjust quickly as health departments issue new guidelines.

Cedar Springs Public Schools Superintendent Scott Smith originally said the district left the decision whether or not to send children to school with a mask on to parents, but they will now have to follow a new ordinance from the Kent County Health Department. Masks should be worn by all students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, regardless of their immunization status, with a few exceptions.

Smith said district leaders will continue to follow the health department’s recommendations, adding that while the start of the school year can be a time of increased tension and anxiety, the district will do its best and will learn from every decision made.

“Ultimately, we will maintain open lines of communication with the Kent County Health Department and also maintain open lines of communication with our students and families, as it is a team effort. No agency can tackle this problem alone, ”said Smith.

Outside of Kindergarten to Grade 6, masks will be optional. Teachers will also be allowed to decide whether they wish to wear a mask, unless otherwise specified by the health department.
