John Richard Coon 1955 – 2022 BRUNSWICK – It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of John Richard Coon, 67, on Monday August 22, 2022 at his home in Brunswick, with his wife and daughters by his side . Born to Reatha and John J. Coon, John was the youngest of three children. He was raised primarily in St. Joseph, Michigan and attended schools there, graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1973 before enrolling at Michigan State University and earning a law degree from Wayne State Law School in 1980. His work for the EEOC after school took him to St. Croix, USVI, where he soon began his own legal practice working on local and state environmental and labor cases , quickly making a name for himself for his legal skills as well as his wit, charisma and calm approach. It was in Sainte-Croix that his future wife would venture into her law firm in search of employment after completing a recent crossing of the Atlantic. Fortuitously for John, this brought Helen to his doorstep and began a romance spanning nearly four decades. Their first daughter, Hannah, was born in 1989 just in time for Hurricane Hugo to devastate the island. Their second daughter, Aryn, was born in 1991 at the dawn of Hurricane Andrew. The aftermath of the storms eventually convinced him and Helen that they needed to move to safer waters. So, after 11 years in the Caribbean, they settled in Brunswick where they bought a farm. In 1995, they welcomed a third daughter, Hallie. With an eclectic mix of animals and three homeschooled daughters, their lives have become a mixture of chaos and adventure. While managing his legal work, John enjoyed in his spare time producing beef raised on local pastures and mixed crops. He was also an avid fly-fisherman, sailor, diver and golfer. He was happy to travel with his wife and family to Latin America and Europe for adventures – but also very happy to transform into characters such as Mrs. Doubtfire for birthday parties. In 2001, John set his sights on a PhD in Earth Systems Science after years of frustration with what he saw as the legal world’s ineffectiveness in “actually helping to solve environmental problems” rather than enforcing them. a legal bandage. He graduated the same year as his daughter, Hannah, from UNH (he with a Ph.D., the other with an undergraduate degree) and started “The Law Firm of John R. Coon.” Over the next 11 years, he tackled some of the most complex environmental cases in the country. He was drawn to the changing links between social and environmental injustices. He made a name for himself in circles big and small as someone who could communicate effectively with everyone involved. In 2020, he and two other friends became partners in the formation of Archipelago Law in Portland to continue to address vital environmental issues holistically. Rarely do we meet a person in life who has such an ability to bring people together, to stand up for what is right, to sympathize with and work on behalf of those who alone could not get the justice they deserve, and with such humility. He helped everyone he could and treated his clients through work the same as his loved ones, constantly offering advice and assistance to friends and family when needed. He will be remembered with great love and admiration and for the idea he passed on to “help those who need you, if you can, whenever you can”. John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Helen Coon; three daughters, Hannah Coon of South Freeport, Aryn Coon of Brunswick and Hallie Coon of Ocala, Florida. He is also survived by his two sisters, Sara Andrews and Shirley Abraham, both of St. Joseph, Michigan. Information regarding the memorial and celebration of life is forthcoming. Arrangements are entrusted to Funeral Alternatives, 46 Bath Rd., Brunswick. Condolences can be shared on FuneralAlternatives.net

Jehovah’s Witnesses resumed door-to-door ministry beginning September 1, when a 2½-year suspension from work was officially lifted. It’s just in time to launch a global campaign with a new interactive Bible study program.

The decision to resume their door-to-door ministry marks the full restoration of all pre-pandemic in-person activities for the 1.3 million Jehovah’s Witnesses in approximately 13,000 congregations in the United States.

Houses of worship, Kingdom Halls, reopened on April 1, witnessing in public places resumed on May 31, and in-person conventions are again scheduled for 2023.

“I can’t wait to knock on my first door,” said Eric Sowell.

Another devotee, Shavon Sowell, added: “Writing letters and calling are wonderful ways to check on people, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a person’s face and their expressions.

The suspension of the prosecution was a proactive response by the organization to ensure the safety of communities and worshipers. The move was also unprecedented. Jehovah’s Witnesses had preached from house to house without interruption for more than 100 years through an economic depression, two world wars and worldwide troubles. But COVID-19 demanded a different response.

“We believe the early decision to close all in-person activities for more than two years saved many lives,” said Robert Hendriks, U.S. spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “We are now ready and eager to reconnect with our neighbors – person to person, face to face. It’s not the only way we preach, but it has always been the most effective way to deliver our message of comfort and hope.

The restoration of the public ministry coincides with a worldwide campaign to distribute a new interactive Bible study program available free of charge in hundreds of languages. The program comes in the form of a book, an online publication, or as a feature integrated into the organization’s free mobile app. Launched in late 2020, the interactive study platform combines text, video, illustrations and digital worksheets to help learners of all ages.

“This new curriculum is designed to meet the learning needs of the 21st century student,” Hendriks said. “We are excited to start sharing it with our neighbors as we resume our personal visits.”

The pandemic has forced Jehovah’s Witnesses to quickly shift to virtual meetings and conventions, while ministering exclusively through letters, phone calls and virtual Bible studies. This has led to an increase in meeting attendance and church attendance, with more than 400,000 newly baptized Witnesses joining the ranks of 120,000 congregations worldwide in the first two years of the pandemic alone.

If I view my household as a business and I strive, like any business, to ensure that my expenses do not exceed my income, what mindset should I adopt post-pandemic to fill my pantry? : just in time or just in time? -Case?

As an inventory management tool, just-in-time, or JIT, has been a business darling for years, created by Japanese automaker Toyota to increase efficiency and reduce costs by having no hand than what is needed at each stage of manufacture. treat.

Over time, however, JIT, also known as lean manufacturing, morphed into finding and securing the cheapest supplier, which often meant offshoring.

“Globalization dominated the day, and American companies failed to source massively from the planet’s manufacturing hub – China,” said Glenn Richey, chairman of the supply chain management department at Harbert. College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama. school interview published last fall on post-pandemic supply chain strategies.

“Just-in-time and lean manufacturing meant that companies no longer had to keep a safety stock of key supplies or even finished products on hand,” he added, as management pursued a “ state of mind at the lowest cost”.

But that all came crashing down when COVID hit and factories around the world were forced to close, leaving businesses that relied on a single supplier without a contingency plan.

For me and my JIT shopping habits, which only restocked the pantry when I ran out, pandemic-induced shortages often meant periods without rice, pasta, or soup.

I certainly wasn’t the only one, as new data quantifies ongoing “inventory distortion” – the combined cost to retail of having too little or too much product for consumer demand. According to IHL Group, a Tennessee-based retail and hospitality research consultancy, stock-outs and overstocks will total $1.9 trillion worldwide this year, up nearly 13% since 2020.

Stock-outs are the biggest problem at $1.23 trillion, according to IHL, which released the numbers in a report and webinar last week. He blamed the growth since the start of the pandemic in 2020 on “massive disruptions due to supply chain gaps, staff and raw material shortages and government shutdowns”.

Greg Buzek, Founder and President of IHL, previewing the report on LinkedIn last week, suggested that inventory management via just-in-time or just-in-case would become a topic of debate in boardrooms of companies “in order to be better prepared for the next external”. disturbance.”

Finding the right balance will not be easy, however, both from a practical point of view – warehouse space for additional inventory is valuable – and existential: will investors accept the higher shipping costs?

“But being better prepared for disruption means more infrastructure, more inventory, and lower short-term earnings for more redundancy in the future,” Buzek wrote.

Looks like my pantry purchase could use an adjustment to grab two of everything on my list – just in case something isn’t there next time.

A Democratic-aligned nonprofit, the Colorado Ethics Institute, has accused Republican Sen. Dennis Hisey of not living in the Senate district he seeks to represent, as required by state law.

Hisey is running in one of the most competitive legislative races in this midterm election, after redistricting made it impossible for him to continue representing his current seat. Democrats, who hope to retain their majority in the state Senate, are fiercely contesting District 11, which covers the southern part of Colorado Springs.

CEI sent a letter to El Paso County District Attorney Michael J. Allen on August 23 asking him to investigate Hisey’s residence.

“Given Senator Hisey’s apparent efforts to claim a district of residence where one does not exist (and to seek to represent constituents who are miles from where he appears to spend his days and nights), I am writing to ask your office to conduct a full investigation into whether he illegally voted in an election for which he was ineligible, as well as any other potential violations of Colorado law,” reads Curtis Hubbard’s letter with the Ethics Institute.

“We have received the information and are reviewing the allegations,” the prosecutor’s office said Monday.

The allegation comes less than a month after Allen’s office announced a grand jury indictment against current seat state senator, Democrat Pete Lee, on a charge that he did not not live where he is registered to vote. Lee quits the legislature because the redistricting knocked him out of his district.

Hisey disputes the allegation that he does not live in the new Senate District 11.

He says he moved into his son’s house in the district last year, but for a while split his time between that house and the house he shared with his wife in his current district of Senate 2 at Fountain.

“I was splitting my time because I still represent Senate District 2. I divided my time between residencies. One of them has to be official and the other is not,” he said.

The Ethics Institute began investigating Hisey several months ago and has photos of him in the Fountain home, including photos of him mowing the lawn.

Hisey disputed that the yard upkeep is indicative of proof of residency — “I’m doing the same for my mother-in-law’s house.”

He said he moved out of his son’s house after buying an apartment in the neighborhood earlier this summer and started living there full-time a few weeks ago.

Redistricting and residency requirements complicate races

The once-in-a-decade process of redefining political lines has forced some lawmakers to run in new districts or find a new place to run.

In Hisey’s case, his home in District 2 was drawn into District 12. The senator currently representing that seat, Republican Bob Gardner, is not eligible for re-election for two years. Under Colorado rules, that means he can keep the seat and any incumbents living in the district must look elsewhere if they want to stay in the legislature.

Hisey moved to Senate District 11 last fall, just as the state’s legislative map was being finalized and just in time to meet the requirement that a state legislator live in a district for one year before being elected to represent it.

The way Colorado law is written, however, challenging residency requirements isn’t easy.

It requires a voter in the district to file a legal complaint and then post a bond of at least $13,000 to cover court costs if the challenge fails.

Senator Lee’s indictment earlier this year was the rare instance where the matter was treated as a criminal case. The complaint is not related to Lee’s residency as an elected official, but rather that he voted improperly, using an address where he does not live.

The charge is a Class 5 felony, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. Lee’s first court appearance is scheduled for September 8.

Several years ago, newly elected Republican state Rep. Matt Soper faced a complaint from a resident of his Western Slope district. The man, who had worked for an unaffiliated candidate in the House race against Soper, alleged the newly elected lawmaker did not live at his Delta address. Soper’s mother owned the house and rented it out to a family.

In this case, the Chamber declined to take up the matter.

Prey, newly added to Disney+, is just the summer movie I’ve been looking for.

The latest entry in the long-running sci-fi/thriller Predator series (with a shaky track record), Prey is a true comeback for the giant, invisible monster with its gurgling roar and rattling hiss.

In fact, in many ways it feels like Prey is more than just a Predator movie, it’s actually much better than that.

Set 300 years ago in the Comanche nation, Naru (played beautifully by Amber Midthunder), a highly skilled hunter and warrior, seeks to prove her worth to her tribe and to herself.

Amber Midthunder is electric as Naru, a woman from the Comanche Nation who faces off against the mysterious and dangerous Predator in Prey. – 20th Century Studios/Disney

She undergoes a sacred ritual, hunting an animal that also hunts her. Little does she know, there is another creature out there with a similar plan in mind – the huge and dangerous Predator; an alien whose main purpose seems to be to kill worthy prey.

Naru also has to deal with a group of French borderers, who have trapped and killed wildlife in a way that destroys the landscape and causes irreparable damage and proves to be another obstacle in his path.

Thanks to her tracking skills, she soon realizes that it’s not just a bear or a mountain lion that threatens her people, but something much worse.

Prey feels like more than just an entry in the sci-fi series, its quality, simplicity, and artistic vision go above and beyond and make it better than recent chapters. This is largely thanks to its setting and its characters which are treated with great care and love. It’s done so tastefully, you can feel that attention to detail throughout.

The Predator, an invisible stalker who destroys the animals and people he encounters, is a metaphor for the colonizers who arrived on the Great Plains with the disease and destruction that followed.

Yes, there are great Predator references throughout, including the regurgitation of some of the iconic lines and some really tense fight scenes between the Predator and its victims, both animal and human. But it’s the Comanche focus that makes Prey such a satisfying experience.

Expertly directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and photographed (by Jeff Cutter), Prey is a wonderful surprise and definitely worth watching regardless of your interest in other Predator movies.

To infinity

Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear is back in a feature that I don’t know who really wanted, but it exists, now on Disney+.

Lightyear begins with a message connecting the spin-off to the original series, saying something like Andy had a Buzz Lightyear toy when he was a kid, that’s the movie the toy was based on.

I mean, of course?

We see Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (played by Chris Evans – NOT Tim Allen, who voiced the character in the Toy Story movies) stranded on an alien planet as he tries to develop a new fuel to get them back into space.

There are time travel issues and a new alien threat that seeks to thwart their efforts.

Lightyear enlists a bunch of misfits to help him, trusting people he wouldn’t normally trust with a potato gun to complete the mission, including the hilarious and lovable SOX (Peter Sohn) , an AI cat toy with an impressive arsenal, which ended up stealing the show from me.

Chris Evans voices Buzz Lightyear in a new origin story about the Toy Story character. -Disney/Pixar
Chris Evans voices Buzz Lightyear in a new origin story about the Toy Story character. -Disney/Pixar

What hurts Lightyear the most is that it’s a movie that I’m not sure needed to exist.

The magic of Toy Story and its sequels is the imagination and connection children make with the toys, not their branding or story; it’s the stories we tell about them that matter. Lightyear tarnishes that innocence by saying, no, that’s real Buzz Lightyear canon.

But I probably need to calm down, because the movie’s charms will definitely appeal to who this movie is really for: kids. It’s a perfectly fine-grained, beautifully animated space adventure, and that might just be all it needs.

I miss Tim Allen as the space ranger though, no offense to Chris.

Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson as the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, hits all the obligatory musical biographical notes and is streaming now on Crave. – United Artists

You make me feel

Continuing my summer movie spree, I decided to watch the recently released Respect on Crave on streaming, starring Jennifer Hudson as legendary singer Aretha Franklin.

Jennifer Hudson’s incredible voice is on full display here, almost meeting the emotional resonance of the Franklin originals, but the rest of the film, sadly, falls short.

The biopic starts out strong, with a look at Franklin’s childhood and growing up with separated parents. One, a bright, progressive but controlling Reverend CL Franklin (Forest Whitaker), deeply rooted in the civil rights movement. And her mother Barbara (Audra McDonald), who inspires and nurtures her daughter’s inherent talent for music.

Things slide into cliché as we see Aretha enter the next phase of her life, chasing record deals, dealing with alcoholism, abuse and conflict with what she wants and what the world expects her.

These are elements that, admittedly, are based on Franklin’s life, but could be taken from almost any artist’s biopic to parody.

I will emphasize again that Hudson’s incredible voice is on full display here, as she navigates the different levels of Franklin’s repertoire and the development of her unique sound.

That aside, the drama of Franklin’s life is played up to almost soap opera levels of overacting and mediocre writing. There’s a moment when a gun is fired at a character, almost incomprehensibly, which elicits an involuntary laugh. There is also a real ghost. Respect, says Grey’s Anatomy, they want their cheese back.

When I heard that Hudson played Aretha Franklin, I was thrilled; she has the voice to reach it. Sadly, almost every other component of the movie falls short. Such disrespect.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt familiar with,” Sony said in a blog post. “We are seeing elevated global inflation rates, along with unfavorable monetary trends, which are impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries.”

The company said that “based on these difficult economic conditions”, it has decided to increase the price of its flagship console.

Here are the increases and new prices for the PS5:

  • Europe: 50 euros ($50) increase to 549.99 euros for the disc version and 449.99 euros for the digital version
  • UK: £30 increase to £479.99 for disc version and £399.99 for digital model
  • Japan: increase from 5,000 yen to 54,980 yen for the disc version and 44,980 yen for the digital model
  • China: increase from 400 yuan to 4,299 yuan for the disc version and 3,499 yuan for the digital model
  • Australia: AU$50 increase to AU$799.95 for disc version and AU$649.95 for digital model
  • Mexico: 1,000 Mexican pesos increased to 14,999 Mexican pesos for the disc version and 12,499 Mexican pesos for the digital model
  • Canada: 20 Canadian dollars increases to 649.99 Canadian dollars for the disc version and 519.99 Canadian dollars for the digital model

Sony’s price hike comes amid a slump at games companies including Nintendo and Microsoft, which saw sales plummet in the second quarter as the pandemic-induced boom begins to fade.

Sales for Sony’s games unit were down 2% year-on-year in the June quarter, while operating profit fell nearly 37%. The Japanese giant has also lowered its annual profit forecast for its games division.

Sony is also facing ongoing supply chain issues that are making it difficult to manufacture enough PS5 consoles to meet demand. There has been a noticeable shortage of PS5s around the world.

Rival Xbox, which is made by Microsoft, has yet to announce a price hike.

Considering “the supply of the PS5 has been severely limited since launch, with many consumers unable to purchase Sony’s latest console, and the fact that Microsoft has yet to show any indication increase in its Xbox Series price, there is no doubt that this price increase will have been a difficult decision to make,” Piers Harding-Rolls, research director at Ampere Analysis, wrote in a note Thursday.

“However, with inflation and price increases being felt through the component supply chain, much of which is denominated in US dollars, as well as continued high distribution costs, Sony has now had to pass some of these cost increases to try to maintain the profitability of its hardware targets.”

Ampere Analysis estimates that Sony has sold 21 million PS5s worldwide, compared to 13.8 million for Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles.

Harding-Rolls said he doesn’t expect this to put off gamers looking to buy a PlayStation 5 given that demand remains high.

“While we believe some consumers who have tried to buy a PS5 without success, or saved up to buy the console just in time for the price to rise, the strong pent-up demand for Sony’s device means that this a price increase of around 10% in most markets will have minimal impact on console sales,” he said.

“We expect Sony’s sales guidance for the PS5 to remain unchanged.”

Taiga Building Products’ supply chain optimization plans have great help on artificial intelligence for automation.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning provider Adastra announced that it has secured a $1.1 million investment from SCALE AI, Canada’s supercluster dedicated to strengthening the country’s leadership role in the areas of artificial intelligence and data science, to work on the Taiga project and be part of the just-in-time inventory model.

Taiga operates 15 distribution centers in Canada, 3 distribution centers in the western United States and 6 charging stations in the eastern United States.

“The overall goal of this initiative is to use readily available data inputs in disparate systems and employ advanced AI techniques to solve three of the most pressing supply chain bottlenecks in building materials: accurate demand forecasting, maximizing truck loads, and optimizing warehouse layouts,” said Adastra.

After the pandemic and the resulting supply chain issues, which have hit building materials as hard as the impacts felt by other industries, the pursuit of performance improvements is a natural desire.

However, this raises a question that goes back at least 20 good years. Is the focus on just-in-time inventory still good? Or does it create significant problems?

For decades, supply chain experts have said that too many companies care about just-in-time inventory management because by reducing lead times and keeping less on hand, companies were able to reduce the costs of their balance sheets, which made them seem much more efficient.

But true just-in-time, or JIT, requires detailed information about all parts of a supply chain. The need is not just to address bottlenecks, but to notice when problems potentially increase, and then bring in more inventory to cover signs that suggest availability might become tight.

That doesn’t mean Taiga has this issue to deal with. But it is prevalent in many businesses and industries.

The worry is that technologies like machine learning can turn into tools to, as they say in high tech, pave the way for cows. Simply put, businesses frequently use technology to do things the way they always have, but faster and more efficiently, assuming that increased speed can make old ways work.

Except perhaps the greatest benefit of a new system is the ability for a business to rethink the way it has always undertaken its operations and strategic planning. Doing things the way you’ve always done leaves a business locked into variations of what it’s always done. When the traditional meets a major disaster, it can become clear that something different was needed all along.
