The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) presented a unique challenge in front of the franchises. With the mega auction that took place earlier this year, the eight existing franchises were allowed to keep only 4 players, respecting the local and foreign quota. Additionally, with the addition of two new franchises, the competition for the best T20 players on the market has become more intense.

For the eight franchises that competed last season, Plan A was to try to re-sign their star players at auction at a bargain price. However, if that didn’t go as planned, the franchises could use their plan B. The secondary plan was to attempt to find a decent replacement for the player who could at least fill some of the void left by the predecessor.

The few franchises have found not just one but several successful replacements. In this article, we take a look at one player from the previous season who was successfully replaced by each franchise.

Chennai Super Kings retained their core from the previous season, as they set out to build a team around the winning combination. However, despite four retentions, there was no room for India’s all-rounder, Shardul Thakur. The Mumbai-based pacemaker had developed a habit of being the partnership breaker during critical moments in the game. In 16 outings last season, Thakur netted 21 wickets at an average of 25.09. Additionally, he brought an extra dimension to his side with his batting prowess.

However, the Chennai Super Kings have somewhat managed to find a suitable replacement for Shardul Thakur in the form of South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius. The Proteas player has played two matches so far and managed to land four wickets. His wickets came at important stages of the game, as the all-rounder dismissed KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock in CSK’s exit against Lucknow Super Giants. The 33-year-old can also hit the ball hard with the bat and could come in handy at some point in the IPL.
